Webb City sits about four miles northeast of our base in Joplin. It began as a mining camp. The city's own history says John C. Webb's plow struck lead ore one June morning in 1873, and the town's first board of trustees met in December 1876. Historic Route 66 still runs through the middle of its downtown, which is a historic district on the National Register.
Houses here span more than a century. Census Bureau figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median Webb City home at 1982. About half were built before 1980, and about one in six dates to 1939 or earlier. Another 31 percent went up in 2000 or later. Three of every four homes are single-family houses, so no two rooflines look quite alike. That is why we look at the house before we plan the lights. A porch gable, a steep main roof and a long gutter run each get their own line of bulbs.
December is a big month in town. The Webb City Sentinel reported that the 2025 Mayor's Christmas Lighting Ceremony was held at The W Club in King Jack Park, with eight new light trees from 10 to 40 feet tall and a display for the 100th year of Route 66. The park lights then stayed on every night through New Year's Day. The city's Christmas parade followed on Wednesday, December 3. In 2024 its route ran south on Main Street from Stadium Boulevard to City Hall at Second Street.
Parks department workers start putting up the King Jack Park displays in October, per the Sentinel. Homeowners have a shorter window. If you want your own house lit by the time the park lights come on, the Saturday after Thanksgiving in both 2024 and 2025, plan to book in early November.

Yes. About one in six Webb City homes was built in 1939 or earlier, per Census Bureau figures. We look at the gutters, the roof edge and the trim first, then clip the bulbs on where they sit straight and hold.
With us. After the holidays we take them down and keep them until next year, so they do not have to fit in your garage or attic.
