Takedown & Storage

When the season ends, your lights come down and go with us.

Lights that went up in November still have to come down, and January is a hard month to be on a roof in Joplin. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Joplin Regional Airport show an average January low of 25 degrees, about 23 nights in the month at or below freezing, and about five days when it stays below freezing all day. Ice is part of it too. In the January 12 to 14, 2007 ice storm, the National Weather Service in Springfield logged a quarter to half an inch of ice in Jasper County, with numerous downed trees and power outages. We do the takedown so you are not up there on a cold, slick morning.

Everything comes down with the same care it went up with. Clips come off the gutter and shingles, and the strands come off without yanking on the wires. ESFI's advice for this step is simple: unplug decorations by the plug, not the cord, and look over the wiring as the lights come down. Any set with cracked or frayed wire or damaged insulation should be thrown out, not stored. CPSC says the same about sets with broken sockets or loose connections.

Then your lights go with us. We store them for you until next year, so they are not knotted up in a box in your garage or taking up room in the attic. ESFI says stored decorations belong in a dry place out of reach of kids and pets, with outdoor sets kept apart from indoor ones. Next season, the same colors are ready to go back on the same house.

06 / FAQ

Takedown & Storage questions, answered.

After the holidays. Tell us the week you would like them down, and we will set the date with you. If the roof is iced over that week, we wait for a clear day.

With us. We store your lights until next year, so you do not need room for them in the garage or attic.

It can be. NOAA's normals put the average January low at Joplin Regional Airport at 25 degrees, and CPSC counts falls as the most common holiday decorating injury. Its report for November 2016 to January 2017 counted two deaths from ladder falls. That is why we do the climbing.

Yes, unless you want a change. Your lights stay with us between seasons, so the set that came down after the holidays is the one that goes back up. Tell us early if you want a new color mix.
